Planning a Temporary Pontoon Hire
Hiring a modular pontoon is more than choosing a platform size. The right system depends on the work being carried out, the site conditions, access, loading and how the platform will be installed and used.
FPS Pontoon Hire provides temporary floating access systems across the UK for commercial, infrastructure and event projects.
1. Tell Us What the Pontoon Needs to Do
The first step is understanding the intended use. Useful information includes:
- Site location.
- Required platform size.
- Number of people using the pontoon.
- Plant, scaffold or equipment loads.
- Required working height or access position.
- Water depth and site-access constraints.
- Proposed hire period.
2. Configure the Platform
Modular pontoons can be assembled into many different layouts. Common applications include Floating Work Platforms, Floating Walkways & Bridges, bridge-access platforms and event pontoons.
The platform is planned around the work area rather than forcing the project into a standard shape.
3. Consider Loading and Temporary Works
Where the pontoon will support scaffold towers, drilling equipment, plant or other significant loads, the stability and temporary works requirements need to be considered before installation.
Suitable projects can be supported through our Safer By Design service.
4. Delivery and Installation
FPS can provide delivery, installation and commissioning of the pontoon system. The installation method depends on site access and may involve hand assembly, vehicle-mounted lifting equipment or another planned lifting method.
5. Safety and Access Equipment
Depending on the project, the system can also include Edge Protection, access steps, life jackets and Safety Boat Hire.
6. Hire, Removal and Collection
Once the work is complete, FPS can dismantle and collect the temporary system. This gives the client a complete access package from initial planning through to removal.
What Can Modular Pontoons Be Used For?
Typical applications include bridge inspections, rail works, watercourse maintenance, geotechnical investigations, swimming-pool access, construction projects and events.

Pontoon, Boat or Both?
Some projects need a working deck, some need a boat and some need both. A pontoon gives a stable platform for people, tools and scaffold; a work boat moves people and equipment; a safety boat provides dedicated rescue cover. We can advise on the right combination once we know the task.
