Kidderminster School Pool: Pontoon Access for Duct Removal

Floating pontoon platform supporting a scaffold tower for overhead maintenance inside an indoor swimming pool
Floating Pontoon Hire UK project image

FPS Pontoon Hire supplied and installed a modular floating work platform with a scaffold tower inside a school swimming pool in Kidderminster. The temporary access system enabled specialist contractors to reach overhead ventilation equipment safely without draining the pool or constructing a fixed platform from the pool floor.

The access challenge

The work involved removing an existing fabric air-distribution duct and its suspension rails above the water. Conventional access from the poolside could not provide a suitable working position, while the live swimming-pool environment required careful control of work at height and work near water.

Our floating access solution

We configured a stable modular pontoon platform on the pool surface and installed a scaffold tower with a maximum height of four metres. The arrangement created a practical working area directly beneath the overhead equipment and could be installed and removed within the client’s short programme.

The modular system was selected to suit the restricted indoor environment and was assembled without altering the permanent pool structure. The project demonstrates how a swimming pool pontoon can support specialist maintenance, cleaning and refurbishment where conventional access is difficult.

Safety controls

The works were planned through project-specific risk assessments and method statements. Controls included:

  • edge protection where practicable around the floating platform;
  • life jackets for personnel working on the platform and at the water’s edge;
  • lifebuoys and rescue lines positioned for immediate use;
  • barriers and controlled access around the work area;
  • daily checks of the platform and rescue equipment; and
  • no lone working during the installation and removal activities.

Our team coordinated the installation and removal with the contractor and the site’s programme. The contractor subsequently confirmed that the work had run smoothly.

Floating platforms for indoor pool maintenance

Modular pontoons can provide a versatile alternative to draining a pool or installing access from the bottom. Platform dimensions and access equipment can be configured for ceiling repairs, ventilation work, lighting, cleaning, inspections and refurbishment.

FPS Pontoon Hire supplies floating work platforms and pontoon-mounted scaffold access for commercial pools and other restricted-access environments throughout the UK.
