Client: AmcoGiffen
Location: River Calder, Mirfield, West Yorkshire
Sector: Rail infrastructure
Project Overview
FPS Pontoon Hire supported AmcoGiffen with over-water access for repair works to a railway bridge crossing the River Calder at Mirfield, West Yorkshire.
The project involved structural maintenance including steelwork and masonry repairs. Restricted riverbank access meant a practical floating access solution was required beneath the bridge.
The Challenge
The site presented several operational constraints:
- Restricted and unsuitable access from the riverbank.
- Safe access required beneath the bridge over water.
- A live rail environment with works coordinated around railway operations.
- River traffic requiring continued passage through the work area.
- Multi-phase delivery including night-time rail possessions.
The FPS Solution
FPS supplied and installed a 4 m × 6 m modular floating pontoon with integrated access steps. The platform provided a stable working area beneath the bridge for operatives, tools and materials.
An FPS safety boat also supported the works, providing personnel transfer and dedicated safety cover. When river traffic required passage, the pontoon could be repositioned in a controlled manner to maintain access through the waterway.

Project Delivery
The first phase focused on steelwork repairs and ran for approximately six months. A later phase involved masonry grouting works undertaken during night-time rail possessions.
The modular system allowed FPS to remain flexible around the client’s programme and the changing access requirements of the project.
Supporting Rail Bridge Repairs Over Water
Floating pontoons can provide close access to bridge soffits, piers, abutments and steelwork where traditional land-based methods are difficult to deploy. Depending on the site and task, systems can also incorporate scaffold interfaces, edge protection, safe access arrangements and temporary works design.

The Outcome
- Practical over-water access beneath the railway bridge.
- Support for steelwork and masonry repair activities.
- Safety-boat support throughout the work programme.
- Controlled coordination with river traffic.
- Flexible support for possession-based rail works.
