Pontoon provider: FPS Pontoon Hire
Scope: Temporary floating access for bridge painting and steelwork protection works
Project Overview
A bridge spanning a waterway required painting and steelwork protection works. Safe, stable access was needed beneath the structure so specialist contractors could complete surface preparation, painting and protective coating activities while keeping disruption to a minimum.
FPS Pontoon Hire supplied a modular floating access platform configured around the bridge and waterway conditions.
The Challenge
The location presented several access constraints:
- Limited land-based access beneath the bridge.
- Working directly over water.
- The need for a stable platform for operatives, tools and materials.
- A requirement to minimise disruption to bridge and waterway users.
Traditional access methods can be difficult to install beneath bridges where bank access is restricted, making a floating platform a practical alternative on suitable sites.
The FPS Solution
FPS supplied a modular pontoon system to create a working platform beneath the bridge. The platform could be positioned close to the structure and configured to suit the area being prepared and painted.
Depending on the project requirements, floating bridge-access systems can also incorporate edge protection, access steps, scaffold interfaces and project-specific temporary works arrangements.
More information is available on our dedicated Bridge Painting Pontoon Access page.
Works Supported
The pontoon platform provided access for third-party contractors carrying out activities including:
- Bridge painting and repainting.
- Steelwork refurbishment.
- Surface preparation.
- Protective coating application.
- General inspection and maintenance activities.
Flexible Access as Works Progress
One of the key advantages of a modular floating platform is the ability to configure and, where site conditions allow, reposition the working area as the programme moves along the structure. This can reduce reliance on extensive fixed access systems.
For wider repair programmes, see our Bridge Maintenance Pontoons and Floating Work Platforms.
The Outcome
- Stable over-water access for painting and refurbishment works.
- A platform positioned directly beneath the work area.
- Reduced reliance on land-based access beneath the bridge.
- A flexible system that could support the planned maintenance programme.
