Project Overview
FPS Pontoon Hire supplied and installed a 50 m modular pontoon walkway at a reservoir in the Brecon Beacons to provide engineers with safe access for silt-removal works.
The reservoir had been drawn down significantly, leaving the working area well below the normal water level. A temporary access route was required from the available bank access to the area where pumping and maintenance activities were being carried out.
Challenging Site Access
The main challenge was logistics rather than the pontoon configuration itself. Vehicle access was restricted, so the pontoon components had to be moved by hand for more than 120 m before being taken down approximately 140 steps to the reservoir floor.
The installation required careful manual handling and coordination by the FPS team before the 50 m walkway could be assembled in position.
Reservoir Access Solution
The completed modular walkway created a practical temporary route for engineers and equipment working around the low reservoir level and silt-removal operation.

The Outcome
Despite the difficult access route, the installation was completed successfully after around seven hours of sustained site work. The project demonstrates the flexibility of modular pontoon systems where conventional vehicle or plant access is limited.
Hand-Carry Installations
Where vehicles cannot reach the water, the modular system can be carried in by hand. A double full-height float typically weighs around 11.5 kg, so components can be moved safely by the team. See Modular Pontoon Floats & Components.
