FPS Pontoon Hire supplied 224 m² of modular pontoon for Morgan Sindall at Heathrow Airport’s Eastern Balancing Reservoir, creating two permanent floating platforms for access to water-quality aeration equipment.
The Heathrow Airport project
Morgan Sindall was delivering a scheme for Heathrow Airport to improve water quality within the Eastern Balancing Reservoir. Maintenance teams required safe access to a series of aerators positioned over the water, where conventional land-based access was not possible.

Two modular floating access platforms
FPS supplied and installed two floating access platforms using a total of 224 m² of modular pontoon. The platforms were configured alongside the aerator pipework to provide practical maintenance access across the reservoir.
The completed arrangement incorporated safe access provisions including edge protection, ladders, anchoring, moorings, fenders and lifesaving equipment. Its modular construction allowed the long working platforms to follow the required equipment layout while remaining supported on the water.

Safe long-term maintenance access
The pontoon system created a stable route for inspection and maintenance teams, reducing reliance on boats or temporary access arrangements whenever the aeration equipment required attention. The installation demonstrates how modular pontoons can form substantial floating walkways for water-treatment and infrastructure assets.

Working beside one of the UK’s busiest airports
The project was completed within Heathrow’s operational environment, requiring careful planning, approved documentation and close coordination with Morgan Sindall and the wider project team.
