Project Overview
Following severe flood damage at Linton Bridge over the River Wharfe, major stabilisation and strengthening works were required around the bridge structure and river pier.
FPS Pontoon Hire provided temporary over-water access to support key phases of the repair programme.
The Access Challenge
The works had to be carried out directly over and within the river, close to a historic masonry bridge. Bank-based access alone could not provide the working area required around the affected pier and underside of the structure.
The FPS Solution
FPS supplied and installed a modular floating working platform around the repair area. The pontoon created a stable temporary base for operatives, equipment and activities associated with the bridge stabilisation works.
The platform could be configured around the structure and adjusted as the programme moved between different work areas.
Works Supported
The floating access system supported activities including:
- Temporary structural support works.
- Specialist piling activities around the bridge structure.
- Removal works associated with the existing deck.
- Installation of structural steelwork.
- Concrete and strengthening works around the repaired structure.

From Stabilisation to Temporary Works Removal
FPS later returned to support the removal of temporary support structures from the river environment. Read the follow-on case study: Linton Bridge Stabilisation Works – temporary works Removal.
The Outcome
The modular pontoon system provided direct access to the river-based work areas throughout the stabilisation phase and demonstrated how floating access can support complex bridge repair programmes from installation through to eventual removal.
Working in Flood-Affected Rivers
After flood damage, river conditions can change quickly. Water level, flow, debris and bank stability are reviewed before work starts, with operating limits and stop-work triggers agreed so the team knows when to leave the water.
