Project Overview
FPS Pontoon Hire supplied and installed a 55 m modular pontoon alongside the Manchester Ship Canal to support de-vegetation works and construction of a new waterside walkway.
The project required a long, stable access platform in a regulated commercial-waterway environment.
Project Requirements
In addition to providing access for the work team, the pontoon and supporting safety boat had to meet the waterway operator’s requirements before they could be used on the canal.
The platform was equipped with suitable safety and operational equipment for the site, including:
- Edge-protection panels.
- Fire extinguishers.
- Lifebuoys.
- Navigation lights.
- Anchoring equipment.
- Access ladders.
Floating Access for Watercourse Works
Long modular walkways can provide practical access where vegetation clearance, bank maintenance or construction activities extend along the edge of a canal or river.

The Outcome
Following the required checks, the pontoon system was installed and used to provide continuous access along the canal-side work area.

Working on Commercial and Regulated Waterways
Commercial waterways usually have their own rules for anything placed on the water. Expect the waterway operator to check equipment such as navigation lights, lifebuoys and fire extinguishers, and to agree how vessel movements will be managed before work starts.
