Project Overview
As part of refurbishment works at Rutland Mills, a steel framework was installed along the canal-facing elevation of the building. Follow-on joinery works required safe access around multiple steel columns positioned over the water.
FPS Pontoon Hire supplied a modular floating access platform configured around the steel-column layout to create a continuous working area for the installation team.
The Challenge
- Working above a canal with limited land-based access.
- Restricted space around multiple steel columns.
- The need for a level working area for joinery and installation activities.

The FPS Solution
The modular pontoon system was built around the steel-column grid, following the line of the structure and providing access where fixed ground-based platforms would have been difficult to install.
The system incorporated edge protection and provided a stable route for operatives working around the canal-facing elevation.

Working Around Complex Structures
One of the advantages of a modular pontoon system is that the platform layout can be configured around structural columns, bridge piers, walls and other obstacles. This allows the working area to follow the structure rather than forcing the project around a fixed platform shape.
