Project Overview
FPS Pontoon Hire supplied and installed a 120 m modular pontoon walkway at Heathrow Airport to support engineers replacing a water pipe across a reservoir serving the airport fire system.
The project required a long temporary working route over water that could provide access for the engineering team while also supporting the pipe-replacement operation.
The Challenge
The reservoir environment and critical nature of the infrastructure meant the access system had to be carefully planned around the working loads, launch arrangements and site controls.
A conventional land-based access route was not available across the reservoir, so a purpose-configured floating walkway was selected.
FPS Pontoon Solution
FPS worked with the project engineers to configure and install the 120 m modular walkway, creating a stable temporary route across the water for personnel, equipment and the pipe works.
For similar long-access requirements, see our Floating Walkways & Bridges and Floating Work Platforms.
Project Delivery
Four FPS operatives completed the installation following the planned launch and assembly process. The finished system provided the engineering team with the required access across the reservoir.
Long Walkways Across Reservoirs
Long walkways need restraint along their length, a width to suit the users and equipment, and access points at each end. Wind and changing water levels are considered in the design. For a more recent project at the same airport, see Heathrow Airport Floating Pontoon Access.
