Project Overview
FPS Pontoon Hire worked alongside SSE Contracting at Kirkstall Bridge in Leeds. The project involved replacing and re-cabling 12 lighting columns.
Kirkstall Bridge spans both the River Aire and railway infrastructure. It also carries a busy road through Leeds and is a Grade II listed structure. In addition, overhead electrical constraints limited the access methods available.
The Access Challenge
The lighting-column cables ran beneath the bridge. The replacement cables therefore needed to follow the existing route and fixing locations.
Access from above was heavily restricted, while conventional ground-based plant was not practical. As a result, the project team selected an over-water access method from the River Aire.
Purpose-Built Pontoon Solution
FPS supplied a purpose-configured modular pontoon beneath the bridge. The platform gave the electrical team direct access to the cable route while working around the road, railway, listed structure and overhead services.
Because several contractors and interfaces were involved, the project also required close communication, careful risk assessment and coordinated planning.
Project Outcome
The river-based access solution allowed the lighting works to progress safely and without incident. SSE Contracting later highlighted the project as an example of how careful planning and an alternative access method can help manage a complex work environment.

Working Beneath Listed Bridges
For listed structures, the access arrangement is planned to avoid fixing into the historic fabric. Contact points are protected, and any consents for the works themselves remain with the client and asset owner.
